Many anguish over the dropout rate. Jerry started 5 charter schools.

Why I Am Running for Lieutenant Governor

My entire career as a social worker in New Mexico has been about pushing against those things in our State which prevent us from becoming as truly free, productive and happy as we could be:

  • our persistent economic poverty
  • our low educational performance
  • our lack of affordable health care and housing
  • our serious drug, alcohol and family violence problems
  • our dependence on political patronage

    And, underlying all the others:

  • the divisions, fear and resentment within our communities which keep us from working together to solve the other problems.

Those were the issues which I worked to change during the four decades I spent as a child welfare worker, mental health counselor, college professor, agency administrator and advocate for children and families in all the places where I worked: Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Taos, Peñasco, Las Cruces and, for the last thirty years, Albuquerque.

Those were the issues which I made my particular focus five years ago when I ran for the District 12 State Senate seat I now hold. Those were the issues on which I have tried to consistently expend my energies during my time in the State Senate. It was while working on those issues that I realized something important about our state, the basic reason I have decided to put myself and my views in front of the voters.

Jerry has produced many articles on New Mexico politics for Albuquerque's Weekly Alibi.

Check out Jerry's most recent columns.

“Every election cycle the pattern repeats itself: an energized electorate responds to campaign rhetoric about change. Volunteers knock on doors, make phone calls, put up signs and organize rallies…for changes they believe in passionately and for candidates they think share that passion. But as soon as the election results are tabulated, we see the victors swoop to the right, away from the changes their supporters wanted and into the embrace of the very groups that opposed them. It has been frustrating to watch.

I want to be the voice within New Mexico’s new administration that says loudly and consistently, we can be better, we can do better; we must match the people’s courage.” - Jerry Ortiz y Pino

“Jerry gets a lot of respect because he is simply genuine. He doesn't do this for his own ego gratification. He’s not playing games. He's real. He is coming from a deep concern about the welfare of people and this state. Also, he’s got a great deal of courage. He will take anybody on. He is just about fearless. He stands his ground and knows what he believes and is on the right side of issues - especially people oriented issues.” - Greta Roskom, of the New Mexico charter School Coalition, is also Director of Albuquerque's Gordon Bernell Charter School.
